UCR Poll Reveals High Consumer Confidence
An opinion poll by conducted by the Escuela de Estadística y Centro de Opinión at Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR), reveals that 72% of Costa Ricans are confident that their family income will increase over the next 12 months. That is the primary result of the sixth consumer confidence opinion poll.
In addition 42 out of every 100 polled are confident that their income increase will be greater than that over the past year.
The results reflect an increase in consumer confidence which has reached 55.7%, the highest level reached in many years.
Just three months ago consumer confidence was pegged at 49.9%. The results are generalized as it takes into account all sectors of the population. In fact, the most poor are the ones that have more faith in increasing their income.
The poll also revealed that those who support the Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC) - free trade agreement with the United States, Central America and the Dominican Republic - have a higher level of consumer confidence that that those who voted against the trade deal.
The poll was taken between November 2 and 8 and took in the telephone responses of 702 heads of families. Johnny Madrigal, UCR investigator, said that there has been a increase in the positive opinion on the current government administration. The UCR investigation reveals that only 13 out of every 100 Costa Ricans are pessimistic on the direction of the national economy.
